Ketamine Awareness Training
From September 2024 Wirral Combatting Drugs Partnership are running a campaign to engage all secondary school pupils aged 14-18 in the risks associated with Ketamine Use.
There is growing concern nationally about the use of this drug by children and young people, and there is evidence that use amongst young people in Merseyside and Wirral is growing. Ketamine is a powerful pharmaceutical anaesthetic, but used recreationally, and
excessively, it can cause significant, even severe, damage to the bladder, kidneys and other
elements of the urinary system. What is causing particular concern is that, in some cases,
where the use of this drug has been frequent and regular, this damage can be irreversible.
In September 2024 all secondary schools will receive a letter to send to parents and carers, a 30 minute PHSE lesson plan and a Ketamine Awareness leaflet provided to all students.
To support staff who will deliver the lesson plan, we have arranged 4 Ketamine Training sessions for staff to attend. The sessions will be delivered by colleagues from Response (young persons substance misuse service) and Wirral Safeguarding Children Partnership.
Objectives of the session are:
- The timeline of Ketamine and prevalence on Wirral
- What is Ketamine?
- How Ketamine affects the body
- How are young people are accessing Ketamine
- Short and long term effects of using
- Ketamine Bladder Syndrome
- What support is available to Ketamine users and how to refer—Response and Partners working together to support Young people on Wirral
- Opportunity for Q&A regarding lesson plan delivery
To ensure the messages young people receive are impactful, it is recommended that the teaching staff member identified in your school to deliver the lesson plan attends the training prior to their delivery of the session to students.
Dates of the sessions are:
- Tues 1st Oct 4-5pm
- Weds 2nd Oct 4-5pm
- Monday 7th Oct 4-5pm
- Weds 9th Oct 4-5pm
