100 Days of Safeguarding – Day 70 – Impact of DA on CYP NSPCC Briefing
Today’s message is a briefing from the NSPCC which highlights the impact of domestic abuse on children and young people during 2020/21 from parents and carers contacting the NSPCC helpline. It reveals that in 2020/21 the NSPCC helpline experienced a 35% increase in contacts about domestic abuse compare to 2019/20.
Parents and carers reported that children experiencing domestic abuse had become withdrawn, sad, timid, emotional and in some cases displayed aggressive behaviour, or were having suicidal thoughts or had attempted suicide. The briefing also highlights some of the barriers and challenges experienced by parents and carers who report domestic abuse to the helpline, including being afraid of repercussions from the perpetrator of the abuse, being worried about losing contact with their children, domestic abuse continuing after a couple have separated
